Melanie Rothman, Oboe
British oboist Melanie Rothman is a recent masters graduate of the University Mozarteum, Salzburg in the class of Stefan Schilli; she previously studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris in the class of David Walter, where she was awarded her bachelor degree in June 2015. Prior to this she was a student of Nora Cismondi at the Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Paris and at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she held the Parepa Rosa Scholarship and was winner of the Leila Bull Oboe Prize and the Nicolas Blake prize for chamber music. Melanie Rothman is passionate about orchestral playing, which started during her time as principal oboe of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain in 2008 and 2009, working with conductors such as Antonio Pappano, Vasily Petrenko, Pablo Heras-Casado, Richard Hickox and Semyon Bychkov and playing live at the BBC Proms. She has since worked professionally as principal oboist with the Britten Sinfonia, the Münchener Kammerorchester, the Tiroler Sinfonieorchester Innsbruck, the Symphony Orchestra of India and in the oboe sections of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg and the Orchestre d'Auvergne with conductors such as Thomas Adès, Ivor Bolton, Jiří Bělohlávek, and Robin Ticciati. As a soloist, she has performed at London’s Wigmore Hall and St. John's Smith Square, at the Leeds International Festival, Weymouth and Dorset Music Festival, Dartington International Festival and the Tate Modern Gallery. She has also taken part in a number of competitions as a soloist, namely the Barbirolli International Oboe Competition 2014, where she was awarded the Isle of Man Bank Prize. Melanie Rothman’s interests also lie in the performance of contemporary music. She was invited to take part in the Lucerne Festival Academy 2017, where she worked with conductors such as Matthias Pintscher and Heinz Holliger. She has also worked with the österreichisches ensemble für neue musik, performed the Salzburg premiere of Xenakis’ ›Dmaathen‹ with percussionist Thibault Lepri, performed Hakan Ulus' ›Gumu'ah‹ for oboe and prepared piano with Nicholas Young and took part in the premiere of ›Symphony 80‹ by Ari Benjamin Meyers with members of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2017.
