2012 John Cage would have been 100 years old. So this year‘s International Summer Course for New Music in Darmstadt will also be an approach to Cage’s musical cosmos. Conducted by Peter Rundel, the opening concert will join the Ensemble Modern and the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie who, for the first time, will be playing together again after many years. The concert at the Darmstadtium includes three of Cage’s most important orchestral pieces: „Atlas Eclipticalis“, a Music generated through chance for which Cage translated star-charts in to the score, „Cheap Imitation“ and the „Concerto for Piano and Orchestra“ with Hermann Kretzschmar at the piano. In addition, the International Ensemble Modern Academy will be playing Cage’s „Sonata for clarinet“, „Water Music“ and „Four b“ and other pieces in Mathildenhöhe at 4.33 pm.
