Yukiko Watanabe, Composer

Born in Nagano, Japan, in 1983, Yukiko Watanabe studied composition and piano at the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo with Keiko Harada and Michio Mamiya. She moved to Austria in 2008, where she studied with Beat Furrer and earned a master’s degree with the highest distinction at the Graz University of the Arts. In 2014, she came to Germany to study for a performance degree at the Cologne Academy of Music and Dance with Johannes Schöllhorn. She has received numerous awards, including a scholarship from the Rohm Music Foundation (2009-2012), the Ö1 Talentebörse Composition Prize (2011), a scholarship from the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs (2013-2014) and a DAAD scholarship (2014, 2015). Her first orchestral piece, “gefaltet...”, is currently nominated for the Akutagawa Award for Music 2016 in Japan.
