Paul Beckett, Viola

Paul Beckett has performed with leading contemporary musicians including Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Interface, Sed Contra and Garth Knox. As a solo artist and chamber musician Paul Beckett performs regularly across Europe including recitals in Austria, Czech Republic, Finland, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine with broadcast on major international radio including Radio 2 Kultur SRF (Switzerland), ORF 1 (Austria) and YLE Radio 1 (Finland).
Recent highlights have included the Ukrainian premiere performance of Ligeti’s Viola Sonata as well as giving a lecture and master classes to the string department at the Tchaikovsky National Academy of Music, Kiev; the Finnish premiere of ›Theseus Game‹ with Ensemble Modern, broadcast on national radio; and a recital with Ensemble Interface at Gare du Nord in Basel including works by Billone, Mundry and Iannotta. He has worked alongside Garth Knox performing ›Viola Spaces‹, and was awarded the Cecil Aronowitz Award and first prize in the RNCM Viola Competition with his performance of Ligeti’s Viola Sonata. Paul Beckett has participated in Klangspuren International Ensemble Modern Academy 2014, IMPULS Festival 2015, Time of music festival 2015 and Gulfstream Festival VII.
Paul Beckett attended Chetham’s School of Music, studying with Graham Oppenheimer. He continued his studies in Manchester at the Royal Northern College of Music, where he completed his Bmus (hons) and his postgraduate diploma with distinction under the tutelage of Mark Knight. After graduating from college Paul Beckett studied with Garth Knox, focusing on contemporary music. From October 2015 he will enrol in the masters course at the Frankfurt am Main Academy of Music and Performing Arts as part of the International Ensemble Modern Academy.
