Bassoonist, electro-music composer and multi-disciplinary collaborator, Alexandar Hadjiev was born in 1987 in Sofia, Bulgaria. He began his musical studies at the National School of Music L. Pipkov Sofia under the direction of Peter Kocev and later continued at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen (Germany) where he studied with Malte Refardt. He attended the 2011-2012 International Ensemble Modern Academy in Frankfurt (Germany) where he worked closely with members of Ensemble Modern and performed throughout Germany, France and Hong Kong. A recipient of the 2007 and 2008 "Alfred and Clare Pott" scholarships, Alexander has participated in workshops led by such artists as Sergio Azzolini, Georg Kliutsch, Gustavo Nunez, Henrick Rabien, Thomas Ludes, Johannes Schwarz, Gyorgy Lakatos, and Ole-Kristian Dahl.
As an active freelancer, Alexander has appeared with the Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Garage, M.A.M., Heidelberger Fruehling Festival Ensemble, the Altstadt Herbst Orchestra, Folkwang Kammerorchester and the Sinfonietta Köln and has performed with the ADI Quintet, which produced recordings for both the Bulgarian National Radio and the Bulgarian National Television. He was a member of the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra Sofia and the Sofia New Symphonic Orchestra. In the 2010-2011 season, Alexander was invited as a guest musician for the Städtische Bühnen Münster's children opera project entitled "Moses muss Singen" and received the opportunity to perform in the WDR3 Open Auditions.
The winner of the 2001 Youth Music Talent Competition and 2006 International Competition Young Virtuosos, Alexander was invited to perform in the Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China with Young Euro Classics. The same year, he was also invited to participate in the International Ensemble Modern Academy held in Schwaz, Austria, where composer, conductor and oboist Heinz Holliger was in residence.
A multi-faceted artist, Alexandar actively enjoys taking part in a variety of cross-genre defying projects including education projects, producing, composing electronic music and working with dancers, DJ's, actors and other artists. He has composed the background music for the Bulgarian National Television as well a number of works for both acoustic and electronic instruments.
