Deepa Goonetilleke was born in 1985 in Brisbane, Australia. After seven years of piano study, she began learning horn at age 11. Deepa joined the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in 2003, pursuing a Bachelor of Music (majoring in performance) under Peter Luff and Ysolt Clarke.
Deepa has performed concertos with both Queensland Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Queensland Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra. Between 2000 and 2007, she was a member of Queensland’s Youth Orchestra, taking part in the orchestra’s extensive international and regional touring program. Over four consecutive years (2005-08) Deepa participated in the AYO’s National Music Camp and, in 2008, was selected for the prestigious Australian Youth Orchestra. Graduating in 2006 with First Class Honours, Deepa earned the Griffith University Medal for Academic Excellence. To extend her musical studies, she made the move to Germany in 2008, studying under Professor Norbert Stertz at the Detmold Hochschule für Musik. Since her time in Germany, Deepa has participated in numerous masterclasses with noted soloists Marie Luise Neunecker, Frøydis Ree Wekre, Hector McDonald and Michael Höltzel. In August 2010, she will participate in the Festival Klangspuren Schwaz as part of the International Ensemble Modern Academy.
