Sun-Young Nam was born in South Korea in 1981. She attended the Seoul Arts High School, where she graduated early, and went on to study at the Korea National University of Arts under Prof. Chong-Pil Lim. She began studying piano under Prof. Hie-Yon Choi at the Seoul National University, and continued her studies with Prof. Einar Steen-Nökleberg (minor in drums under Nobert Krämer) at the College of Music and Theatre in Hannover. She transferred to the College of Music in Karlsruhe to study under Prof. Kaya Han.
Sun-Young Nam has won numerous prizes at competitions in Korea and received scholarships from the Kumho Cultural Foundation, the Arts Foundation of North Rhine-Westphalia, and the Gisela and Erich Andreas Foundation. She has attended several master classes taught by Arnulf von Arnim, Klaus Hellwig and Evgeny Mogilevsky, among others.
Since 2004 Sun-Young has devoted herself intensively to contemporary music and given several performances at the Hannover Society for New Music e.V. During the Stockhausen Course Days in Kürten, she won first prize for her performance of “KONTAKTE for electronic sounds, piano and drums” and “KLAVIERSTÜCK XII”.
