Ying Wang, Composer

Ying Wang was born in Shanghai, China. She began studying composition under Xilin Wang, Gang Chen and Daquen Jia at the Shanghai Conservatory. In 2003 she continued her studies at the College of Music in Cologne under York Höller. Since 2008 she has studied electronic composition under Michael Beil. She is now receiving instruction from Rebecca Saunders while taking her concert examination.
Ying Wang has participated in numerous workshops, including the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music (2006 and 2008), Sävellyspaja composition workshop at the Suvisotto Festival in Porvoo near Helsinki (2008) and the “Off-Programme” for students at the Donaueschinger Music Days in 2007. She has also taken courses taught by Beat Furrer, Michael Reudenbach, Toshio Hosokawa, Adriana Hölszky, Dieter Mark, Jukka Tiensuu, Jouni Kaipainen and Misato Mochizuki.

Ying has received awards at composition competitions by the Franz Josef Reinl Foundation and the College of Music in Cologne. She has received commissions for new pieces from the “Young Euro Classic”, College of Music in Cologne and the International Young Composer Festival "new music, new faces". She is a scholarship holder at the International Ensemble Modern Academy in Frankfurt in 2009/10.

Ying has worked at a number of orchestras and ensembles, such as the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra in Helsinki, the orchestra of the College of Music in Cologne, the Baikonur Ensemble, the Cassatt String Quartet, the Junges Ensemble für Neue Musik and duo Plus. In addition to working with renowned musicians like Andrea Carola Kiefer, Ingolfur Vilhjalmsson and Dariusz Przybylski, she has collaborated with well-known conductors, such as Marcus Creed, Matthias Krüger, Dmitri Slobodeniouk, Jesko Sirwend and Thomas Jung.

She has written works for a variety of formats, e.g., solo pieces, electronic music, chamber music and orchestral works. Her compositions have been performed in Beijing, Shanghai, Cologne, Stuttgart, Berlin, Frankfurt, Augsburg, Vienna, Helsinki, Cracow and New York.
