Azusa Katayama-Schöner, Clarinet

Azusa Katayama (*born in Shiga, Japan in 1980) began playing the clarinet at the age of 12. She attended the music class at Ishiyama Senior High School in Shiga and took clarinet classes from Sumio Yamakawa. She went on to study under Yoshiaki Suzuki at the State University of Music and Fine Arts in Tokyo where she attained her bachelor’s degree. After winning prizes in the Shiga New Talents Competition in 2002 she came to Germany and continued her studies at the Detmold Music Academy under Prof. Hans-Dietrich Klaus and Prof. Thomas Lindhorst. She completed her training with a graduate recital.

Azusa Katayama attended several master classes given by Michel Arrignon, Norbert Kaiser and Charles Neidich as well as the international summer academy for chamber music in Lower Saxony. She also gathered experience in New Music through her collaboration in the Ensemble Horizonte in Detmold and through performances resulting from her partizipation in Germany and Switzerland. Since 2008 Azusa Katayama has been studying at the Freiburg Music Academy under Prof. Jörg Widmann.
