Call for Applications
Directed by Ensemble Modern and the composer and conductor Johannes Kalitzke the International Composition Seminar will be taking place for the fifth time. In its bipartite structure still unique in Europe, the upcoming issue of the seminar will be integrated into the first edition of the newly founded Festival for Modern Music, taking place in Frankfurt am Main and Darmstadt from 25th to 27th November 2011.
For the first time the International Composition Seminar will also be giving the opportunity to work together with a large orchestra through the cooperation with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, hr-Sinfonieorchester.
Through the connection to the new Festival of Modern Music and by providing the participants – also for the first time – with a pre-set work topic, the participants will have the chance to dedicate their ideas and their work to an aspect of music that, for various reasons, has continuously remained vital: The festival theme “Music and Space” will thus be revisited and illuminated in new and varied ways.

The seminar will be offering 6 assignments of works for ensemble and 2 assignments of works for orchestra and ensemble.

The festival is a joint undertaking of the partners Ensemble Modern, Hessischer Rundfunk, Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt, Institut für zeitgenössische Musik of the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst, Frankfurt am Main and Deutsches Architekturmuseum.

In addition to the theme “Music and Space”, the artist and scientist Iannis Xenakis will be in the focus of this year’s festival. As part of the concert programme Xenakis’ “Alax” and “Terretektorh” shall also function as a background for the works developed in the composition seminar and the new compositions for Ensemble Modern and hr-Sinfonieorchester plus Ensemble Modern.

Composers and conductors interested in this project are invited to participate.

Project periods:
08. – 12.02.2011 and 18. (approx.) – 27.11.2011
(Compulsory attendance without exception)

Final concerts:
during the above mentioned second period, in association with the new Festival for Modern Music in Frankfurt and Darmstadt, to be recorded by hr2 Kultur.

Age limit:
approx. 35 years

Closing date for entries:
20th September 2010 (postmark)

Notification of results:
In the middle of October 2010. Following the nomination of participants and the assignment of the compositions for ensemble or orchestra plus ensemble, all participants will be informed about the exact instrumentation and other relevant conditions.

1. Project Phase - 07. – 12.02.2011
In this first of two phases the compositions and ideas developed during the seminar will receive three days of rehearsal and discussion together with Ensemble Modern and two days together with both Ensemble Modern and hr-Sinfonieorchester. Intensive work sessions will offer the explicit opportunity, to rehearse only parts of the newly developed or still nascent compositional ideas or sound visions.

2. Project Phase - 18. (approx.) – 27.11.2011
The already initiated "works in progress" are brought to a conclusion. Ideas and insights gained during the first phase can be included into the pieces and completed during the second phase. The rehearsal phase also leaves room for exchange and discussion and leads to the concerts during the recently founded three-day festival.
