Since 2004, the International Ensemble Modern Academy has offered master classes at the annual Klangspuren Festival in Schwaz in Austria. From its founding in 1994, the festival has developed to become one of the largest and most important music festivals in western Austria focussing on contemporary music. The original concept - to provide a professional and expandable platform for contemporary, living music in the western part of Austria and to present the origins and the pioneering spirit of this New Music - is still today the cornerstone of the programme design. The master classes of the International Ensemble Modern Academy are one of the most successful and important projects of the festival.
With members of the Ensemble Modern as tutors and renowned composers (Helmut Lachenmann, György Kurtág, Wolfgang Rihm, Michael Gielen, Steve Reich, Johannes Maria Staud, Martin Matalon) as »composers in residence«, musicians of the next generation can be sure that these master classes will be very intense and constitute a real challenge. Together with tutors from the Ensemble Modern, conductors and the "composer in residence" at the time, pieces of music from the 20th and 21st centuries are worked on and performed within the framework of the festival.
